Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience (WICN)
The Welsh Assembly Government awarded Wales’ three leading
universities (Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea) £5.17 million
to establish the new multi-centre Wales Institute of Cognitive
Neuroscience (WICN). Over an initial funding period of four years
(to 2009/10), the WICN will draw together and build upon existing
excellence at these three Universities with investment in a shared
management structure, administrative support, additional high quality
academic appointments, as well as equipment and technical support
to underpin the development of a world-leading Institute for the
study and application of cognitive and clinical neuroscience. The
WICN sets out to address several of the priorities outlined in
the Welsh Assembly Government's 'Reaching Higher' strategy.
These include the generation of increased research and knowledge
transfer income, and the strengthening and increase in capacity
of research in Wales through building on existing excellence.
In line with this strategy, there will be three core areas of activity:
a. The reconfiguration of cognitive neuroscience research groups
in Wales to develop sustainable research collaboration;
b.
The establishment of a sustainable cross-University Graduate
School, and;
c. The development of partnerships with industry and
healthcare, together with dissemination activities. For more information see the website at:
